A play that took just four weeks to write is bound to have some hiccups along the way, right? The Play that Goes Wrong is exactly what you’d expect. Except when you have the hits and misses – you end up with an award winning play that has audiences laughing days later.
I had no idea what to expect from The Play that Goes Wrong because honestly, I’d never heard of it. But the research was done and I knew it had won awards, was said to be hysterical and a must-see, so I was excited!
And to say it was an amazing night out is a complete understatement.
What is The Play that Goes Wrong about?
First of all, pay attention in the minutes leading up to the start time. Even when the lights are still on!
Leading up to the opening act, you are dragged in as you watch the set crew work on some finishing touches before the curtain rises. And then quickly welcomed as The Cornley University Drama Society presents The Murder at Haversham Manor. A 1920s whodunit that reminded me of my favorite 80s classics – Clue and Haunted Honeymoon.
A play within a play, These “young” actors are giving it their all… But it’s just not enough when the set keeps breaking, lines are forgotten or repeated and a main character is knocked unconscious. Multiple times.
All the mishaps and disasters that plague a director’s nightmares happen in one hilarious night. And you’re there to witness it!
The Stage
It may not look like much at the start of the show, but by the end, you’ll be wondering how they did it all!
From the floors breaking to the wild slamming, and the walls falling down to the elevator breaking. The set takes a beating and still keeps on kicking over and over again.
I can’t imagine what happens behind the scenes.

Should you bring the kids?
The Play that Goes Wrong is perfect for date night or girl’s night out. But there are a few scenes that had me thankful I left the kids at home.
How did we like it?
I personally loved every second of it! I was laughing uncontrollably at one point. And my husband who was threatening to fall asleep after a long day at work – I didn’t hear one snore out of him! A snort or ten, yep. He had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The cast was on point. And had the audience belly laughing, cackling and no one was leaving their seats. Not even to potty!
I can’t recommend The Play that Goes Wrong enough. It makes for a wonderful couples night out.
