Like most woman my age, I grew up on the Nancy Drew mystery novels. I’ve always been intrigued by the mysteries and would jump to conclusions as I spent hours reading each book.

When I heard they were bringing Nancy to life on screen I couldn’t wait to see it. I literally jumped at the chance of doing this review and I wasn’t disappointed!

What’s Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase about?

Adapted from the second book in the Nancy Drew series, this film picks up after Nancy Drew moves to a new town, River Heights after her mother’s death. She has already made some very close friends, George and Bess, but is struggling to make it in the quiet town. When presented with a chance to solve a ghost mystery, Nancy Drew jumps as the chance even though she has to team up with the high school “mean girl”, Helen to solve the case. So, who’s behind the haunting of Twin Elks Manor?

Is Nancy Drew kid friendly?

Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase is rated PG and I completely agree. It’s mild compared to many “family” films out there, but it does have some moments that could scare young ones. Think along the lines of the live-action Scooby-Doo films.

There are some parts that should probably be discussed with tweens after the film. Just to reaffirm that this is a movie and some of the ways Nancy handles her adversaries isn’t the proper way to go about things. Nancy does come to this conclusion during the film, which is a perfect way to lead the conversation.

How is Nancy Drew updated for today’s audience?

From the issues Nancy and her friends deal with at school to skateboarding around town, the filmmakers made sure to make Nancy Drew relatable to today’s kids.

Sophia Lillis, did a wonderful job bringing Nancy Drew to life and add a little sass to the character. Her quirky personality shines bright as she does everything she can to stand up for her friends, save her dad and solve the local mystery.
