My husband and I recently renewed our vows and it was an Avengers themed wedding. As I was trying to figure out what shoes to wear, I decided I wanted comic book shoes. It was too late to buy some off of Etsy, so I had to do it all myself. Here’s my quick and simple guide to DIY comic book shoes. Trust me when I say it’s – EASY as 1, 2, 3.
Guide to DIY Marvel comic book shoes
My husband and I got married in a court house randomly one Tuesday morning. It wasn’t glamorous or fancy. Everyone laughs when I tell them I was in an Oscar the Grouch Christmas t-shirt and jeans… But seriously, that’s what I was wearing. And now almost 13 years later and countless military moves – I have no idea where that beloved shirt is now.
But finally, I got to plan the “wedding” of my dreams. And while it wasn’t without drama or hiccups, my comic book shoes seriously made my day!
When I made up my mind that I was going to make these shoes, I admit I was nervous. I do not see myself as crafty. Heck, my parents banned me from super glue when I was a teen and my family cringes when I pull out the glue gun. I’m a crafting disaster, but I’ll admit, once the mess clears everything usually turns out pretty good.
I actually started working on one and quit shortly afterward thinking it was looking horrible. But I went back that night and realized – it was AWESOME! So, I pressed on.
And I’m so glad I did! The shoes were a hit. I was hiking up my dress to show off my pretties to everyone, including random strangers in the elevator.
So, how did I create these masterpieces? With comic books and Mod Podge. I’m not kidding it’s that simple!
1. Gather the materials you’ll need
- Shoes
- Comic books you don’t mind cutting up
- Mod Podge
- Paint brushes
- Scissors
- Paper towels
2. Follow these simple steps
- Cut the comic book(s) into various shapes and sizes.
- Use a paint brush to put Mod Podge on the shoe where you plan to place the comic book cutting.
- Place the comic book piece and cover with more Mod Podge.
- Use a paper towel to gently wipe off any extra Mod Podge
- Continue with the same technique until the shoes are how you want them.
It takes some patience as sometimes the piece you planned to use doesn’t fit exactly right. And the edges around the soles of the shoes can be tricky, but trust me when I say it’ll all work out. I found that small triangles were my go to shape when doing the area around the soles. And I lined the soles and the top of the shoes and worked my way in. And make sure to save any pieces you want to highlight for the end.
Don’t be scared to overlap or to add comic book pieces. Once my shoes where done I went back and added a Howard the Duck picture I found in one of my comic books, simply because I love him.
My husband was so jealous of how my first shoe turned out, he ended up joining me the next day and did his! He didn’t cover them completely but instead made them more two tone vintage inspired.
