Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is out in theaters everywhere and fans are flocking to see it on the big screen. But should you take young kids, tweens or teens to see the movie? I break it down by age group and answer the question “Is Jurassic World appropriate for kids.”.
I was invited by Universal Pictures to a media screening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, but all opinions are my own.
Is Jurassic World Appropriate for Kids?
My Monster (my son) and I had the pleasure of attending a screening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. He’s 10 years and has been counting down the days until this film came out. But was it appropriate for him or did it end up being a parenting fail?
Synopsis:
Young ones: 5 and under
Just a big nope! I know kids are fascinated with dinosaurs, but this isn’t the dino film for them. Instead of taking them to see Fallen Kingdom why not plan a family movie night and introduce them to the awesome movie “The Land Before Time”.
Kids: 6 – 9 years old
The violence is a little much for this age group, in my honest opinion. I say leave them home with a sitter and have a date night. There is also some swear words, which for your family may be a factor.
Why not invite their friends over and have a small dinosaur themed party with these Jurassic World inspired dino treats. The kids can still experience the excitement of the new movie and feel included in all the hype. And you don’t have to worry about being woken up with “I had a nightmare”.
Tweens: 10 – 12 years old
Now a days many tweens are good to go with this film, but you know your child. If they are sensitive there are a few scenes that could be a little tough on them. Again, there are mild cuss words, but at this age unfortunately they’ve probably heard worse on the school playground.
My son is 10 years old and he covered his head a few times during some of the more intense scenes. But he also has anxiety and is a wee bit of a scaredy cat, so I went it just hoping I didn’t have to leave in the middle of the movie! He made it through the whole film and liked it.
Teens: 13 and up
Unless you’re teen is ultra sensitive or isn’t a fan of some mild gory scenes you’re good to go. Again, you know your child and what they can handle.
Children with anxiety
This film keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. It is roughly 2 hours and it was over before I knew it. With that in mind, some children with anxiety may have a tough time. For my Monster, I think the suspense of waiting for what was coming next was what caused him to hide his head than the actual violence. So if your child’s anxiety is high, I’d be comfortable saying “wait till it comes out on video”.
There were laughs, tears and screams from the whole theater. Chris Pratt shined with his hilarious one liners and everyone adores his relationship with Blue. I loved the introduction of some new characters and the surprise as some old ones joined in. Overall, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a great sequel for adults and older kids.
