Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms hits theaters Friday, November 2nd, 2018 and is sure to be a smashing success. But with a PG rating, is Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms appropriate for kids?
Parent’s Guide to Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms
I adore The Nutcracker ballet and have since I was a young girl. I remember watching it on TV every holiday season as my mother sat shaking her head. I finally got to see the ballet a few years ago and fell in love all over again. So, to say I was excited to see Disney’s take on it, is an understatement.
What is Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms about?
Young Clara (Mackenzie Foy) is searching for a key to open an extraordinary gift. But the journey leads her on a grand adventure no one expected. On her travels, she encounters the nutcracker soldier, Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), who vows to protect her no matter the cost.
In the wondrous new land, Clara meets the regents who guard three of the four realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. The brave duo travel to the dark fourth realm and take on it’s regent, Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to take back the golden key Clara has been searching for.
Is Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms scary?
I wouldn’t say scary exactly, but there is an overall ominous feeling throughout the movie.
Some moments could frighten young children. Including the scenes in the Land of Amusement with the Mouse King. This is scene isn’t too far into the start of the movie and it is simple to cover the young one’s eyes while it’s happening. But if you or anyone in your view party has a fear of clowns or mice I’d avoid the movie.

But he did what any tween does these days – watched the trailer on YouTube and decided it didn’t look so bad.
Xander ended up loving the movie. To him, it was a combination of The Chronicles of Narnia and Alice in Wonderland. I feel that is an excellent take on the movie.
He doesn’t like how loud movies can be, but Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms wasn’t too loud for him. He’s also known as my scaredy-cat, but this film didn’t scare him.
My review of Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realms
I went in with high expectations and it didn’t disappoint. I was worried that the adaption to film would erase all sense of the traditional ballet, but was pleasantly surprised. The ballet aspects are highlighted in a practically perfect way.
The film is a unique and reimagined take on a holiday classic. In my opinion, Disney’s Nutcracker and the Four Realm is appropriate for all ages with some parental guidance as the rating suggests.
This endearing tale is not your mother’s Nutcracker ballet and is sure to capture the hearts of everyone who sees it.
