Abominable roars into theaters everywhere on September 27, 2019. This heartwarming tale is visually stunning but it’s the story that is award winning. But even as an animated film is it appropriate for all ages? Find out if Abominable is kid-friendly in this parent movie review.
I have been seeing previews for Abominable for weeks now. Yes, completely breaking my no trailer rule. But I honestly didn’t think this movie was going to be much.
O. M. G. was I wrong! I dragged my husband with me and we both left the theater speechless.
What is Abominable rated?
The film is rated PG, which we all know encourages parental guidance. And I believe that rating is very fitting.
While most of the movie is appropriate for all ages there are little things that could be considered triggers for some. Hence the suggested guidance.
How long is the film?
The runtime is 1 hour and 40 mins which is perfect for a kids film. Just about the time they start getting antsy the credits are running!
Is there any swearing?
Nope. None. Abominable was made for kids, so they made it as kid-friendly as they could while sticking to the storyline.
Are there any trigger points in Abominable?
Yes, there is. Without giving too much away – Abominable follows a young girl, Yi (Chloe Bennet, Marvel’s Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D) whose father has passed away. Yi is struggling with her grief and it’s a huge part of the storyline throughout the film.
This can be a trigger point for any child or adult that has lost a parent or loved one. So, I highly suggest you proceed with caution. And be prepared to comfort or answer any questions that may come up.
Another possible trigger point is that there are some kids making fun of Yi at the beginning of the movie. No more than a few lines and nothing physical, but this can be seen as bullying to some. Which if your child is or has been a victim of bullying it could cause some feelings to come up. It’s over almost as soon as it begins, but it is in there.
So is Abominable kid-friendly?
I believe so. And it’s a family-friendly film that is good for the whole family. The animation is on point. The Yeti is cute and friendly-looking. And even the bad guys aren’t that scary.
Little ones will love the bright colors and the music will attract their attention. The adventure and storyline will keep older kids entertained. And adults will love every aspect of the film and the joy it brings to their kids!
My Abominable movie review
Abominable follows Yi and her friends on a once in a lifetime adventure over 2000 miles across the Asian continent as they take Everest, a young Yeti Yi found on her apartment roof, home. Friendships are tested as they come face to face with bad guys – Burnish (Eddie Izzard) and zoologist Dr. Zara (Sarah Paulson) who aim to capture the Yeti for their own personal reasons.
I couldn’t get over the stunning visuals. Breathtakingly, beautiful scenery that inspired me to add the Himalayan Mountains and the Leshan Giant Buddha to my travel bucket list.
The Abominable storyline is wonderfully written. The movie captures your heart as soon as the first scene rolls. Everest, the Yeti, is positively adorable. And the friendships he builds with three kids is awe-inspiring.
It’s a story about friendship, family and following your dreams. And so much more then I expected it to be!
I took my husband with me and while he loves movies, I know he wasn’t thoroughly excited to get up early on a Saturday to see the movie. But he loved it. So much so that he mentioned wanting to see it again on Sunday. We will be taking the family to see it this weekend!
And bring tissues. You’ll need them.
